They say that change is the only constant – and I can’t begin to tell you how that resonates with me.
Life’s journey has led me through numerous changes, and now I find myself in another chapter of transformation. In this current period of change, I’m preparing for my 22nd move in 23 years. Yes, you read that correctly! And yet somehow, I’m doing it yet again.
While this move feels good in terms of progressing towards longer-term stability and satisfying an old longing to feel settled, I can already feel the stress of what is ahead building inside of me.
To be clear, this is a complex move. There are multiple people, schedules, priorities, needs, and locations in play. The multicolored family calendar that attempts to connect all the various moving pieces is quite literally a work of art.
But because I’ve learned a thing or two about how I respond to these types of changes, I’m approaching it differently than I did prior moves. I’m making a conscious effort to prioritize what truly matters, allowing myself to manage the energy I invest in each area of my life before the chaos hits.
As I embrace this new chapter, one of the changes I will make is stepping away from my monthly newsletters and email updates. When we make decisions to manage energy, sometimes it means pausing something we love. And while I love connecting with you each month through your inbox, I’ve realized that this is an area where I can step away with grace to find some much-needed rest in the midst of a demanding season.
Managing my energy is one of the ways I have learned to go with the flow of change rather than fighting against it. I imagine change as stepping into a vast ocean. It’s not about avoiding the waves but learning to navigate them skillfully. For much of my life I approached change with fear and avoidance, but now I see myself as a seasoned swimmer, someone who knows the ocean’s rhythm and can go with the flow even if the waves knock me over.
Yes, it can still be overwhelming at times, and there may be moments where I’ll feel like saying, "Damn, that was a serious wave!" There will be times when emotions surface as I swim in this ocean. That’s called being human and having a nervous system that responds to my surroundings. But that’s also part of the journey – feeling the full spectrum of emotions and acknowledging them with compassion.
Despite those difficult moments, this move feels different from moves in the past. It doesn’t feel like I’m just getting pummeled by an endless cycle of chaos and turmoil. I’m feeling a sense of strength within me that wasn’t there before. I don’t feel as fragile or overwhelmed as I once did. I’ve learned to trust my resilience, to communicate and ask for what I need from myself and from others, and that makes all the difference.
If you’re going through a period of change or upheaval yourself, remember that it’s okay to seek support and prioritize self-care. Ask yourself: what do you need in the midst of what is occurring in your life right now? What is helpful? What is not helpful? What can you remove in order to prioritize yourself and your own rest?
